In 2020 the world woke up to pandemics, emergencies and climate change and cities are striving to cope. One emerging strategy that centers food is popularized as a "community resilience hub" where high volume food distribution, among other resources, can be distributed during times of crisis, and in the best of times they serve other valuable functions. This panel will instead focus on a smaller human-scale solution that activates spaces in neighborhoods where people grow food together, share the harvest, and come to socialize, learn and play. During crisis moments, these locally cherished and creative places may be a valuable partner to the high volume regional efforts and strengthen the community fabric, health and food system in an invaluable way. This panel discussion will highlight some place-based examples of “neighborhood resilience foodways” and discuss their challenges and potential.
